The Derbyshire villages of Repton and Gresley jointly organised race meetings in the middle of the 19th century. Repton lies on the edge of the River Trent, less than 5 miles from Burton on Trent, and is famous for its school, Abbey and Priory. A meeting took place on Gresley Common on Saturday 15th April 1848, although this was not the first occasion the two villages had combined. Previously, on Tuesday 4th March 1845, the Repton and Gresley Troop Steeplechase over 3 miles was contested, when staged at nearby Swarkestone. The race was repeated at the same venue on Tuesday 10th March 1846 when Alice Grey was successful for Mr Orton. Much later, on Tuesday 27th April 1875, the Repton and Gresley Troop Hurdle was held at Swarkestone Bridge. |
